Women’s Basketball Completes Weekend Sweep, Tops Goldey-Beacom 54-46

WILMINGTON, Del. – Two days in a row and two 20+ scoring performance as the New Haven women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 54-46 win over the Goldey-Beacom Lightning on day two of the Goldey-Beacom Tip-Off Tournament.

Leading the Chargers on the day was junior Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) who completed her fifth career game with 20+ in the scoring column as she put up 22 points, the most by a Chargers so far in this young season. Hogan finished the game shooting 7-of-15 from the field, including a trio of three point field goals. In addition, she went 5-of-6 at the free throw line while pulling down six rebounds, picking off a career-high five steals and blocking one shot.

Joining Hogan with double figures in the scoring column was senior transfer Paige Cote (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) who finished her second-straight game with 10 points, closing out Saturday's win shooting 5-of-12 from the field. She also added four rebounds, a pair of assists and a pair of blocks. Both Bianca Pendleton (Accokeek, Md./New Hope Academy) and Aniya McDonald-Perry (Middletown, Conn./Putnam Science Academy) followed with eight points.

As a team, the Chargers closed out the game shooting 35.4 percent from the field, connecting on 17-of-48 field goal attempts. Among the 17 field goals were three from beyond the three-point arc, while they also added 17 points at the free throw line, those coming on 21 total attempts for an 81 percent average.

FIRST QUARTER NOTES

·        The Chargers opened the scoring for the game picking up a layup from McDonald-Perry in their second possession of the game, adding their first points off turnovers thanks to a steal from Hogan that provided the offensive opportunity.

·        For the second-straight game, New Haven got off to a hot start, opening up a double digit lead before the Lightning were able to break their scoreless drought. In the early 12-0 run for New Haven, Hogan led the way with eight points including a pair of three pointers.

·        Overall, the Blue and Gold held the home team of the scoreboard for more than five minutes with the Lightning connecting on their first bucket at the 4:25 mark. Prior to that, the Chargers defense forced Goldey-Beacom to go 0-5 from the field and forced four turnovers.

·        Hogan's eight early points were part of 11 total in the first 10 minutes of action as she went 4-of-6 overall including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the three-point arc. She also picked off two steals and had a block in the first quarter.

·        Overall, just three players scored in the opening period with Cote and McDonald-Perry each adding one basket apiece for two points.

SECOND QUARTER NOTES

·        After outscoring the Lightning by eight in the first quarter, the Chargers outscored them by seven in the second quarter, limiting Goldey-Beacom to just five points in the second 10 minutes period, all leading to a 27-13 lead at the halftime intermission.

·        It was another strong defensive start for the Chargers as they once again held the Lightning off the scoreboard, this time for nearly eight of the 10 minutes.

·        In that drought for the Lightning, the Chargers were able to open up their first double figure lead of the game which came on the opening bucket of the period from senior Charlotte Bassett (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) as she broke into the scoring column.

·        With that defensive stand for the Chargers, New Haven was able to open up an 18 point lead before Goldey-Beacom managed their first points at the free throw line with 2:12 remaining before intermission.

·        The Chargers used a more balanced scoring spread in the second quarter, with four different players accounting for the 12 points. Cote and Pendleton each led the way with four points, while Hogan and Bassett each added a field goal for two points.

THIRD QUARTER NOTES

·        For the first time in the game, the Lightning struck first to start the third quarter, scoring the first five points before New Haven got on the board 96 seconds into the period on a McDonald-Perry layup.  

·        The Chargers were able to maintain their double figure advantage through the majority of the period, building it to as much as 15 with 3:30 remaining thanks to a jumper from Pendelton.

·        Goldey-Beacom answered that 15-point deficit by scoring 10 of the final 12 points of the period to cut the New Haven advantage to seven heading into the final quarter of action.

·        Pendelton led the Chargers in the third with four points as she went 2-for-3 from the field in five minutes of work in the period. Two other players all finished with a field goal as Hogan and McDonald-Perry each added two points to their total.

FOURTH QUARTER NOTES

·        For the third and final time in the game, New Haven started out the scoring once again in the fourth quarter as Hogan opened things up with a jumper to cap off the opening possession of the frame.

·        The lightning answered right back with a three pointer to cut the New Haven lead to six, but the Chargers wouldn't allow them any closer than that for the remainder of the game.

·        New Haven regained a double figure advantage thanks to a Cote layup with 3:23 remaining. From that point on all of the Chargers scoring came at the free throw line as they closed out the game going a perfect 8-of-8 at the line to secure the victory.

·        Hogan would lead the Chargers scoring in the fourth quarter as she pushed her scoring total over the 20-point threshold at the line where she was 5-of-6 in the period, finishing the final 10 minutes of action with seven points.

The Chargers will return to the hardwood on Wednesday evening as they turn their attention to the Northeast-10 and their opening game in league play on the road in Rindge, N.H. against the Franklin Pierce Ravens.
