MANCHESTER, N.H. – Led by a new career-high and a game-best 32 points from senior Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie), the New Haven men's basketball team dropped an 83-69 decision to the Saint Anselm Hawks in the opening round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. With the loss, New Haven wraps up its 2023-24 season with a 10-19 overall record after concluding the regular season with a 7-15 record in Northeast-10 Conference action.
Overall, Thomas was part of a trio of Chargers to finish in double figures as he was joined by Jah'Likai King (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) and Tyler Saint-Furcy (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence Woodmere Academy) who finished with 15 and 10 points respectively. The 15 points from the rookie guard King leads to him closing out the season with double figures in each of the final 13 games of the season.
Thomas closed out his career shooting 12-of-18 from the field with half of those 12 field goals coming from outside the three point arc, with the six three pointers also setting a new career-high. King's 15 points on the night came from a 6-of-22 shooting effort, while Saint-Furcy's last 10 points of his career comes on a 4-of-13 effort from the field.
As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 43.5 percent overall which came on a 27-of-62 field goal effort. Among the 27 field goals were nine from outside the three point arc, while the Chargers were also 6-of-13 at the free throw line.
In addition to taking the victory, the Hawks also won the battle of the boards with a commanding 44-31 margin. Leading the rebounding efforts for New Haven was sophomore Joshua Hopson (Jersey City, N.J./MacDuffie School) who pulled down eight boards while Saint-Furcy followed him with seven. King added to his 15 points with five rebounds and a team-high three assists.
