SPARKS, Md. – Wrapping up its two Spring Break games at the USA Lacrosse Complex, the New Haven women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-12 overtime decision to the Seton Hill Griffins on Sunday afternoon at Tierney Field. With this decision, New Haven falls to 3-2 on the season and will next open up Northeast-10 Conference play when they head to Springfield, Mass. to take on American International Wednesday under the lights at Abdow Field. Opening draw against the Yellow Jackets is set for 7:00 p.m.
New Haven trailed by two midway through the fourth quarter and rattled off back-to-back goals to knot the game at 12 with both of those goals, one each from Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) and Katie Schenk (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug), coming on player-up opportunities. With neither team able to score in the final four minutes, the teams went to an extra period with Seton Hill scoring on the opening possession, just 57 seconds into the first extra frame, to secure the golden-goal victory.
Overall for the game, New Haven relied on six players for their 12 goals, with a pair of Chargers concluding the game with a hat trick, Castiglione and Schenk. Among the pair, Castiglione led all New Haven players with four points, adding one of two of the Chargers assists in the game.
Joining Castiglione and Schenk with double figures in the scoring column was Giana Caprioli and Cameryn Antler (Hebron, Conn./Mercy) who each finished with two goals, while Cypress Levitt (Calais, Vt./Montpelier) and Caitlyn Seleny wrapped up the scoring with one goal apiece. Levitt added the second New Haven assist to finish with two points. Overall, New Haven took 32 shots and place 27 of them on goal.
Five of New Haven's 12 goals came on free position attempts with both of Antler's scores coming in that fashion. Levitt, Caprioli and Schenk also added free position goals, while Castiglione led New Haven with five draw controls.
In the cage, New Haven relied on its trusted leadership of Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) who in a full 60 minutes of action finished with 13 saves. The senior netminder has now racked up double figure stops in all five games on the season.
