Game Recap: Softball |

Chargers Fall in Battle of Elm City

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After a split during their road stand, the University of New Haven softball team found their bats in game twos against the Falcons and Greyhounds but looked to keep the momentum and find their bats in both games as they their road trip continues with a short drive to take on their cross-town rivals in Southern Connecticut State University for a midweek Elm City Battle.

Making her first-ever appearance in the Elm City rivalry, Breanna Kinney (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) got the start in the circle for the blue and gold and got the first two Owls that she faced to line out and pop out. Kinney gave up a single to the third batter but got the final out of the inning from a flyout. Kinney would hang another zero in the second inning keeping her team close. The Owls would score a pair of runs in the third to take the lead over the Chargers. Kinney would bounce back throwing two scoreless innings against the Owls keeping it a two-run game and close for the bats to be able to get back into the game. Southern however would score another pair in the sixth inning to take a four-run lead. Looking for four, Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) picked up the Chargers first hit of the game with a leadoff single in the seventh inning and would steal second on the very next pitch but would be stranded as the Owls would take game one 4-0. New Haven looked to keep the steak alive of taking game two's with offensive powers and looking to split the Elm City series. Looking to bounce back, Viana McKinley (North Chesterfield, Va./Monacan) got the start in the circle and sat the Owls down in order in the first inning. The Chargers picked up their first hit of the game in the second inning off the bat of Breanna Trueman who beat the glove of the shortstop, but would be left on the bases in the inning. The Owls were the first to score in game two as they pushed their first run across in the second inning scoring the first run of the game. McKinley would settle back in on her way to throwing six innings striking out four, but would give up a pair of runs in the sixth as the Owls would take game two 3-0 as the Chargers dropped the pair in the Battle of the Elm City.

New Haven now turns their attention back home as they open up a three series home stand with a filled weekend of action when they first welcome the Hawks of Saint Anselm to Charger Softball Field on Saturday, April 13 which will also be the Chargers Senior Day Game with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. from West Haven. All updates, schedules, and post-game recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
