Game Recap: Softball |

Chargers Fall to Setters in Game 1 Pitching Duel

PLEASANTVILLE, New York. – Coming off their three series home stand where the Chargers closed it out strong winning three straight, the University of New Haven Softball team traveled to Pleasantville to take on the Setters of Pace University in a conference double header before the team returns back to Charger Softball Field to start the new week.

As the Chargers turned to freshman Breanna Kinney (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) to match against the Setters ace in Gisselle Garcia who ranked as one of the top pitchers in the conference. In a classic pitchers duel both teams offenses were held quiet not breaking the stride of either pitcher. Kinney held her own against Garcia matching her work and hanging zeros on the scoreboard keeping her team in the game. The Setters pushed their first game across in the second inning but Kinney bounced right back hanging a zero and finding pace again. The Setters would push a second run across in the sixth inning as Kinney would throw a complete game giving up two runs on six hit while striking out a pair in the 2-0 loss as the Chargers looked for a similar strong pitching performance in game two while looking for the bats to come alive and split the series with the Setters. The Chargers picked up their first hit of the afternoon in the second inning but would strand the runner in the inning. The Setters were the first to push a run across in the second inning as they would score in three straight innings, a run in the second, third, and three in the fourth off Skylar Griffin (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) who came in for relief for Chargers starter Viana McKinley (North Chesterfield, Va./Monacan). Pace would score three more runs in the sixth inning taking game two 8-0. Lauren Havesat had two of New Haven's three hits in the game as Kylie Thorpe (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) picked up the third hit of the game. McKinley would throw three innings giving up eight hits and three runs as Griffin threw two and two thirds innings giving up five runs, two earned, while striking out one.

Looking to bounce back the Chargers return home to Charger Softball Field for their final home games of the season to open up the week when they first welcome, I-95 Rival, the University of Bridgeport on Monday, April 22 as they open up their final week of the regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. between the Purple Knights and Chargers, and all updates, schedules, and post-game recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
