Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

In-State Rivals Play to Scoreless Draw

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Following 90 minutes of a hard-fought back-and-forth battle between longtime rivals, the University of New Haven men's soccer team closed out a 0-0 draw with the I-95 rival University of Bridgeport Purple Knights. Following the decision, New Haven stands at 2-0-1 overall on the season.

New Haven set the tempo of the game throughout, leading the two squads in total shots with a 10-3 advantage. Half of the 10 shots forced the Purple Knights keeper into action, including a pair of second half saves that had the capacity crowd on the edge of their seats.

The 10 shots for New Haven came from six different players, five of those players among the starting 11, including midfielder Albert Portas (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Sust) who led the Chargers with five total shots, two of which were on goal.

In addition to Portas two shots forcing Bridgeport keeper into action, brothers David and Mattia Maiello (Novara, Italy/Liceo Carlo Alberto) each had a shot on goa, while Gianluca Trastulli (Rome, Italy/San Giovanni Evangelista) registered the final shot.

Defensively, New Haven's starting keeper Archie Watts (Bristol, England/SGS College) was forced to make just one save in the game, a kick save that came late in the second half. The graduate transfer goalkeeper closed out his second clean sheet of the season.

The Chargers will return to the pitch over the weekend when they play away from their West Haven campus for the first time this season when they head to Long Island for a date with the Molloy Lions on Saturday, September 14. Opening kickoff in the non-conference battle is slated for 12:00 p.m. at the Rockville Centre Sports Complex.
