WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Coming off of back-to-back matches over the weekend, the New Haven women's tennis team continued its domination of the fall schedule with a 6-1 win over the visiting Assumption Greyhounds on Tuesday afternoon at the New Haven Tennis Courts. With the win, New Haven improves to 6-0 on the season and 5-0 in the Northeast-10.
The Blue and Gold opened up the afternoon match winning the doubles point in a thrilling finish that took a tiebreaker at the No. 3 position to decide the point. The No. 1 doubles pair of Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) and Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) continued their undefeated season as a pair with a 6-1 victory, while the Greyhounds evened the doubles battle at one win apiece taking the victory at No. 2, with the point coming down to the final pairing of Leni Bischof (Aigen, Austria/BRG Stainach) and Laura Ortner (Schlierbach, Austria/BRG Kirchdorf). The back-and-forth match-up was forced into a tie breaker with the Chargers securing the long-fought victory 7-6 (12-10).
In singles action, the match decision would come down to the No. 1 singles battle between Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) and Laurence Bosmans following victories at No. 3 and No. 4 from Risako Umekuni (Saitama, Japan/Shumei Eiko) and Victoria Togores (Canary Islands, Spain/Colegio Hispano Ingles). Both Umekuni and Togores won in straight sets with Umekuni securing the first singles points on a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Togores would follow with a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the No. 4 position.
With three points in the books for the Chargers, Ferrarini secured the match victory at No. 1 singles, defeating Bosmans 6-4, 6-2. Following the deciding points, the Chargers would add two more points to their tally with Ortner taking a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles and Agustina Ravera (Miramar, Fla./Broward Virtual School) using a tiebreaker to win the point at No. 6, 6-0, 7-5, 10-4.
The lone points for the Greyhounds came in the final match-up to finish on the day, the No. 2 pairing of Carreras and Assumptions Caroline Mader. Carreras took the opening set by a 6-3 margin with Mader forcing a third set decision with a 6-3 victory in set two, before earning the victory with a 6-2 win in the third set.
After a stretch of four matches in less than a week, the women's team will take a much deserved rest ahead of the next time they step onto the court which comes on Wednesday, October 2 when the Chargers host Chestnut Hill for a non-conference clash. First serve against the Griffins is set for 1:00 p.m. at the UNH Tennis Courts.
