WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Goals aplenty for the New Haven men's soccer team as four different players found the back of the net for the Blue and Gold in a shutout of the visiting Holy Family Tigers on opening night at Kathy Zolad Stadium.
In a game where 23 different Chargers saw time on the pitch, the Chargers scored three times in the second half to put the game out of reach and earn the first clean sheet of the season for graduate goalie Mattia Palanca (Grottammare, Italy/ITI Montani di Fermo). The netminder finished his season debut with a pair of saves, facing 10 total shots from the Tigers.
Opening up the scoring for New Haven was the Chargers captain, Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet), who came off the bench to net the first goal of the 2024 season thanks in part to a pass from Anthony Denis (Cannes, France/ETP AC Ajaccio). The lone first half goal from Lindstrom came on four first half shots, with Holy Family leading in that column 8-4 in the first 45 minutes.
Coming out of the intermission a new face for the Blue and Gold, Mattia Maiello (Novara, Italy/Liceo Carlo Alberto) beat the Tigers keeper with an unassisted tally late in the 67th minute. Just over five minutes later junior defender David Rosen (Vikingstad, Sweden/Degger Gymnasiet) broke through working off a pass from Albert Portas (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Sust).
The final tally of the night came in the 80th minute as Pau Santanach (Barcelona, Spain/Collegi CreaNova) inked his return to Kathy Zolad Stadium after a two-year hiatus with an assisted goal thanks to newcomer Deni Iljazi (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico).
The men's soccer team will continue a season-opening three-game homestand with a Sunday afternoon matinee with a battle of the Chargers on tap as Dominican visits West Haven. Opening kick off is set for 1:00 p.m. with all of the action available on Flo Sports.
