WEST HAVEN, Conn. –
The New Haven women's basketball team has never held a team to 30 points or less in a Northeast-10 Conference game until today as the Chargers posted a 39-30 win over the visiting Assumption Greyhounds on Wednesday night at the Jeffery P. Hazell Athletics Center. With the win, New Haven improves to 12-5 on the season and 7-4 in NE10 play.

The 30 points allowed is the lowest New Haven has held an opponent in 2024-25 and the lowest since limiting Wilmington to 21 points to open the 2023-24 schedule. In conference play, New Haven has never held an opponent to 30 points since joining the Northeast-10 ahead of the 2008-09 season, while it is the lowest the Chargers have held a conference opponent since the 2007-08 campaign when they held Concordia to 28 points on January 26, 2008.

Leading the Chargers on the night was junior Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) who was the only New Haven player to finish in double figures as she led all players in the game with 16 points, connecting on 6-of-13 overall for the game, including four buckets from outside the three point arc.

Following Hogan in the scoring column was senior guard Charlotte Bassett (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) who finished with nine points, just shy of a double double as she led all players in the game with 10 rebounds. Paige Cote (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) rounded out the leading scorers with seven points. Bassett's 10 rebounds led New Haven to a 35-24 lead in the battle of the boards as Hogan followed her with seven rebounds.

COACHES QUOTES

"We followed the scout perfectly tonight," said head coach Debbie Buff. "We talk in practice about locking in on our multiple defense and tonight our team defense was stellar for 40 minutes. We won the battle of the boards by 11 with Charlotte [Basset] leading us with 10 rebounds. Aniya [McDonald-Perry] and Paige [Cote] were fantastic on the interior. Lindsay [Hogan] had a great game on both sides of the floor. The energy in the gym was electrifying."

FIRST QUARTER NOTES

·        The Greyhounds came out of the gates scoring first, connecting on their first possession of the evening after New Haven secured the opening tip but came up empty in its first trip.

·        Sabira Ahayeva (Minsk, Belarus/Minsk #27) was the first to connect for the Chargers as she evened the score at two on a drive to the hoop.

·        Assumption would not relinquish that early lead until late in the opening quarter, building as much as a six point buffer which came at the six minute mark.

·        New Haven answered that six point deficit by holding Assumption scoreless the remainder of the quarter and outscored the Greyhounds 7-0 to take a 12-11 lead into the first break.

SECOND QUARTER NOTES

·        Hogan would net the first two baskets of the second quarter for New Haven as she connected from outside the arc on both buckets and built the Chargers lead to five, 18-13.

·        Assumption responded to that deficit by scoring six unanswered to take 19-18 lead.

·        The layup for Assumption that provided -that lead change came with 4:34 remaining in the quarter and turned to be the last of the half for the Greyhounds.

·        New Haven would score the final four points of the frame on layups from Schuyler Coles (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township), the first off a turnover and the second off an offensive board, all amounting to a 22-19 lead at the intermission.

THIRD QUARTER NOTES

·        Entering the second half, both teams would need time to warmup with the first three minutes scoreless with Assumption the first to score.

·        New Haven answered back just nine seconds later when Cote broke the Chargers drought with a turnaround jumper thanks to the assist from McDonald-Perry.

·        Assumption would net the next two baskets, the second one coming with just under four minutes left in the quarter and providing the final lead of the night for the Greyhounds at 26-24.

·        Cote would come through again to end the Chargers latest drought, this time thanks to a pass from Hogan who would go on to score the final points of the quarter on another basket from outside the arc, providing a 29-26 lead and the final lead change of the night.

FOURTH QUARTER NOTES

·        After holding the Greyhounds without a basket for the final 3:46 of the third quarter, the Chargers defense would keep the pressure on and hold Assumption off the board for the first nine minutes of the fourth quarter as the Blue and Gold put the game out of reach.

·        Bassett opened the fourth quarter scoring with a layup 90 seconds into the frame which began a 10-0 rally that resulted in a 13 point lead.

·        Despite New Haven being held without a field goal over the final 4:37, the Chargers defense prevailed, keeping Assumption off the scoreboard until 59 seconds remained in the game.
