Viera, Fla.- University of New Haven softball team, the Chargers fell to Ferris State 9-1 on Thursday morning and in the afternoon, game pick up a win against D'Youville score of 6-4. Brining their overall record to 1-7.
Game one
The Chargers started strong, taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) scored an unearned run. However, this would be their only run of the game. Despite the loss, there were some bright spots for the Chargers.
Rachel Krogman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage) went 2-for-3 with a double, while
Kylie Thorpe (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) also collected two hits.
Jaclyn Piazza (Queens, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) came in as a pinch runner and managed to get a hit as well.
Game two
After falling behind 4-0 by the fourth inning, New Haven mounted an impressive comeback in the fifth. The rally was highlighted by
Bella Chenet's (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) inside-the-park grand slam, which gave the Chargers a 5-4 lead.
Stephanie Smith (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) also contributed with an RBI single earlier in the inning. The Chargers added an insurance run in the sixth when
Peyton Sullivan (Savona, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) singled to left field, driving in
Allison Murai (Sammamish, WA/Skyline High School). Offensively,
Gianna Depino (Northford, Conn./North Branford) led the Chargers with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Chenet's grand slam accounted for four of the team's six RBIs.
Katie Rhodes (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) earned her first win of the season, pitching 1.1 innings in relief.
Breanna Kinney (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) closed out the game with a 2.2-inning save, her first of the year.
This victory comes as a significant morale boost for New Haven, following their earlier 9-1 loss to Ferris State in the morning game of their doubleheader. The Chargers will look to build on this momentum as they continue their Florida trip one more day left against Post and Minnesota Crookston.
