West Haven, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team came out strong but couldn't hold off a late push from Dominican University, falling 11-8 in an East Region non-conference match up on Wednesday night at Kathy Zolad Stadium.
The Chargers started hot, building a 4-1 lead by the end of the first quarter and extending their advantage to 6-2 heading into halftime. However, the momentum shifted in the third quarter as the visiting Chargers from Dominican evened the score at 7-7 heading into the final quarter.
Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) broke the tie midway through the fourth quarter, finding the back of the net to give New Haven an 8-7 edge. But Dominican responded with four unanswered goals, shutting down the Chargers' offense for the remainder of the game and securing the 11-8 victory.
Leading the scoring effort for New Haven was
Gianna Caprioli (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt ) with two goals and two assists.
Katie Schenk (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug/Endicott) added two goals, while
Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton), Castiglione,
Lindsey Belmonte (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport), and
Sophia Minnion (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) each tallied one goal.
The Chargers controlled the draw, winning 13-9. Schenk led the effort with seven draw controls, while
Helena Dunwoody (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) and Castiglione each contributed three. Defensively,
Maddie Sage (Manchester, N.H./Goffstown High School) made eight saves in net to keep the game competitive.
New Haven looks to bounce back quickly as they return to NE10 play on the road this Saturday, March 22, at 2:00 PM against Southern New Hampshire University.
