Panthers Get By Chargers in Overtime

GARDEN CITY, NY – The University of New Haven Chargers saw their season to an end on Saturday afternoon following a 15-14 overtime loss at Adelphi in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Chargers opened the game with a pair of goals from Katie Schenk (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) and Gianna Caprioli (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt). Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) assisted on Caprioli's goal. After the Panthers got on the board, Castiglione found the back of the net to give New Haven a 3-1 lead.

The teams traded goals the rest of the first quarter with Caprioli scoring again for the Chargers, who led 4-3 after 15 minutes.

The Panthers scored four of the next five goals, with a Schenk marker mixed in, to open up a 7-5 lead. Another Caprioli goal, set up by Lindsey Belmonte (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport), made it a one-goal game at halftime.

After Adelphi opened the scoring in the second half to go up 8-6, New Haven scored three unanswered goals to go ahead 9-8. The first two came from Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton), who caught fire in the third quarter, scoring all six of her goals in the final 30 minutes. Schenk scored the third.

With the game tied at nine, the Seleny show continued as she struck twice in the span of 1:33, giving her team an 11-9 advantage.

The Panthers went on a run scoring four straight goals and went ahead 13-11 midway through the fourth.

Seleny and Schenk would not be denied as they both hit the back of the net again, tying the game with 4:20 remaining in regulation.

With :30 remaining, the Panthers scored to go ahead 14-13. The Chargers won the faceoff, got the ball to Seleny, and she fired it into the net once again for her sixth tally of the day, sending the game to overtime at 14-14 where the Panthers got the golden goal with 3:28 remaining in the fifth quarter.

Maddie Sage finished with 11 saves in net for the Chargers.
