WEST HAVEN, Conn. — The New Haven women's soccer team fell to Wagner 3-0 on Thursday. The Chargers outshot Wagner 13-9, including an 11-5 edge in the second half, but were held scoreless despite putting six shots on goal.
New Haven earned the first corner and first shot on goal of the half, but Wagner scored twice after the 28-minute mark, and the Chargers went into halftime trailing 2-0.
Trinitie Maloney (Brick, N.J./Brick Township High School) kept the match scoreless with a save on Riley Frederick in the ninth minute, and the Chargers later added a
Kelsey Landers (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) shot at 22:40. Maloney made another save on Kelly Gallagher at 27:04, but Vanessa Lovisa scored at 28:05 and Wagner added a second goal at 31:23 to close the half's scoring.
New Haven created second-half pressure but could not break through, finishing the half with multiple shots on goal and seven corner kicks. Early in the half, the Chargers put together a stretch from 51:25 to 55:23 that included two
Janayah Body (West Hartford, Conn./Lawrence Academy) shots, an Alves attempt saved by Abigail Marcello, two corner kicks, and an
Emma Mitchell (Edinburgh, Scotland/Liberton) shot saved to the bottom right.
Jordan Galica (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) stopped a Kelly Gallagher shot in the 59th minute, but Wagner added a goal by Alana Goldsmith at 58:58 to make it 3-0. The Chargers continued to push after that, getting saved shots from
Savannah Reed (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township High School),
Emily Marco (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) and
Molly Heras (Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Borough High School), then adding late attempts from
Layla Coppola (Woodbury, Conn./Nonnewaug),
Maria Lobo (Porto, Portugal/Escola Secundaria Fontes Pereira de Melo) and
Bianca Cevallos (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn High School) before an 88th-minute corner.
Alves put both of her shot attempts on goal, leading the Chargers with two shots on frame. Reed finished with two shots, including one on goal. Maloney started in goal and recorded two saves in 45 minutes.
Up next, New Haven will travel to Chicago, Illinois, to face Chicago State on Sunday, Oct. 11.
