Sacred Heart Uses Strong Second Half to Get by New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The New Haven field hockey team lost to Sacred Heart 5-2 on Friday. The Chargers scored twice in the first quarter but were held without a goal over the final three quarters. Sacred Heart finished with a 19-5 shot advantage.

New Haven created early pressure with back-to-back penalty corners, getting a blocked shot from Jalia Cooper (Millville, N.J./Saint Joseph Academy) before Abbie Volfman (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) scored from Liz Trentmann (Amsterdam, Netherlands) at 1:42 for a 1-0 lead. Sacred Heart tied it 1-1 on Bridget McLaughlin's goal at 4:25. The Chargers moved back in front after another penalty corner, with Cooper scoring at 9:59 off assists from Angela Simou (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) and Volfman. Sacred Heart's late corner led to a wide shot as the Chargers finished the quarter ahead 2-1.

Sacred Heart created the first chance of the second quarter when Joey Pompeo shot wide at 16:32, and Lauren King later scored from Bridget McLaughlin at 21:37 to tie the game at 2-2. The Chargers pushed for a response at 27:15, but Jordan Gagliastro's (Worcester, Mass./Doherty Memorial) shot was saved by Brianna Cooper. Sacred Heart had the final two attempts of the quarter, with Rylie Wyckoff shooting wide and Bridget McLaughlin having a shot blocked, leaving the game tied 2-2 at halftime.

New Haven spent much of the early third quarter defending against Sacred Heart pressure, as the home side earned penalty corners at 32:38 and 36:34 and sent three shots wide. Sacred Heart converted at 40:19, with Lauren King scoring off an assist from Celia Benson for a 3-2 lead. The Chargers pushed back with a penalty corner from Volfman at 41:05, but Lauren Schoonmaker's (High Falls, N.Y.) shot was blocked at 41:16, and the quarter ended with Sacred Heart ahead 3-2.

Sacred Heart opened the fourth quarter with sustained pressure, earning a penalty corner at 46:50 before Cara Lambert (Sutton, Mass./Sutton Memorial) saved shots from Blaire Sparks and Cate McConaghy. Joey Pompeo scored off McConaghy's assist at 47:17 to push Sacred Heart's lead to 4-2. The home side followed with two more penalty corners and three additional shots over the next four minutes. After a green card to the Chargers' Ali Kowalski (Metuchen, N.J.) at 55:45, Lambert stopped Lauren King's shot at 57:59, but Holly DeAngelo scored from King's assist at 59:10 to close out Sacred Heart's 5-2 win.
