New Haven Falls to CCSU

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — New Haven football (2-6) lost to Central Conn. St. (4-3) 42-20 in a road game Saturday at Arute Field. New Haven threw for 304 yards and finished with 19 first downs but was held to two rushing yards and committed three turnovers.

Jake Tripptree (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) completed 25 of 46 passes for 304 yards and one touchdown. Lasalle Rose Jr. caught four passes for 91 yards, D'Arious Reed (Nashville, Tenn.) added four receptions for 36 yards and one touchdown, and Frederick Borkey (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Thomas More) recorded nine tackles and recovered a fumble.

New Haven answered Central Conn. St.'s opening touchdown with two Liam Quigley (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Govenor Livingston) field goals, the second a 41-yarder after Tyler Hammel (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) forced a fumble and Borkey recovered at the Central Conn. St. 35. Tripptree helped set up the first score with a 38-yard completion to Rose, and Quigley's second kick made it 7-6 with 2:06 left. Central Conn. St. had the ball in New Haven territory when the first quarter ended with New Haven down 7-6.

New Haven was held scoreless in the second quarter while Central Conn. St. scored two rushing touchdowns to move ahead 21-6 by halftime. New Haven's best offensive sequence came after Dre Kirton's (Uniondale, N.Y./Holy Trinity) 39-yard kickoff return, when Tripptree hit Matt Chandler (Oviedo, Fla./East Coast Prep) for 22 yards on third-and-18, but the drive stalled at the Central Conn. St. 46. Earlier, New Haven's defense forced a missed 52-yard field goal, but a blocked punt later set up Central Conn. St.'s first touchdown of the quarter.

Tripptree's 15-yard touchdown pass to Reed was New Haven's scoring answer, moving the score to 28-12 with 5:07 left in the third quarter. Earlier, New Haven drove to the Central Conn. St. 19 before Quigley's 36-yard field goal attempt was blocked. Late in the third quarter, Lucas Theriaque's (Woodstock, Conn./Putnam Science Academy) interception gave New Haven a takeaway, but a sack-fumble on the next play set up Central Conn. St.'s 22-yard touchdown pass that sent New Haven into the fourth trailing 35-12.

New Haven opened the fourth quarter by finishing an 11-play, 86-yard touchdown drive that stretched from late in the third quarter into the fourth. Tripptree hit Issac Glaudin (Queens, N.Y./Holy Cross High) for 30 yards to the 2 before Caleb Williams (Pearl Mississippi, Pa.) ran in a 2-yard touchdown at 10:41. Reed caught the 2-point conversion pass to make it 35-20, but New Haven's next two possessions ended on downs and an interception. Central Conn. St. added a late touchdown to close the scoring.

New Haven will host Duquesne University on Saturday, Oct. 31, at noon at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium in West Haven, Conn.
