Week of 2/9 Highlights

Week 2 of the University of New Haven's regular season with the National Esports Collegiate Conference National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) and National Association of College Esports (NACE) has just finished with eight wins and just three losses.  All teams are determined to demonstrate improvement within the next few weeks.

Tuesday February 10th, 2026

The League of Legends Junior Varsity team had a double header in the NACE league.  Their first match was against Bow Valley College and the second match was against Florida Institute of Technology, which both ended in a 0-1 loss for the last two matches.  The team hopes to learn from this loss and continue to improve and remain confident to prepare for future matches.

Marvel Rivals had a match against Trent University in the NECC league where they came back from a huge deficit last week and secured a win going 3-2.  UNH started off strong during the first round by being more aggressive.  Co-Captain Hassan Jannan (Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah High School) (Bappo) showed dominance and picked off some enemies, carrying the team from the beginning.  Co-Captain Dixon McDonald (Baltimore, MD/Bedford High School) (HulkZucchini) played as Vanguard Captain American and got some crucial kills to lead UNH into a first-round victory and was named MVP for round one . This gave the team more momentum during the rest of the match.  After the second round, Alejandro Garcia (Guaynabo, PR/Colegio San Jose Rio Piedras) (Goggles) played as Duelist Spider-Man and was also named MVP for picking off enemies to secure eliminations for UNH.

Our Super Smash Bros team went against Montclair State University (Montclair, NJ) in the NECC league but unfortunately faced a 0-2 loss.  UNH did not make this an easy match though, as the team continues to demonstrate their perseverance and giving it their all. They intend to continue this mentality for the rest of the semester.

Wednesday February 11th, 2026

The Super Smash Bros team had a match against one of their main rivals: Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) in the ECC league.  Antonio Taveras (Newark, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) (Octobro) started off the match for UNH and had a great first round performance that put the team in a great spot.  It gave the rest of his teammate's momentum for the rest of the competition.  Captain Alex Fishler (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle High School) (Deception) demonstrated his competitive side as well and finished off the round for UNH, securing them the overall win.

Thursday February 12th, 2026

Valorant had a match against the College of Staten Island in the ECC league that resulted in a surprising 0-2 loss.  The Valorant team is ranked as Seed #1 and the College of Staten Island is ranked as Seed #4 in the ECC league.  The Valorant team will learn from this match and will focus on improving from this in their next matches.
The UNH League of Legends team competed against Dalhousie University in the NECC league, where they secured the 2-0 win after two devastating losses from earlier in the week.  Christopher Cardenas (Waterford, CT/Waterford High School) (Deltina), the new captain of the team, was able to lead his team to victory.  The team has been constantly improving after every week, which will give them extra confidence for upcoming matches.
The UNH Rocket League team also had a match against Atlantic University in the NACE league this past week.  They won 2-0 and are hoping to use this as momentum for their upcoming matches.

Friday February 13th, 2026

The Junior Varsity Overwatch team had a double header and their first match was against Drexel University in the NECC league, which resulted in a sweeping 3-0 victory for UNH.  All players contributed to the win, as they were able to communicate better and get a few team kills.  Alejandro Garcia (Guaynabo, PR/Colegio San Jose Rio Piedras) (Goggles) received a player MVP as Genji for the second round of the match and Cassidy Steiner (Wantagh, NY/General Douglas MacArthur High School) received play of the game as Juno.

For their second match, they played against Southern New Hampshire University in the ECC league, where they suffered a 0-3 loss, but that did not let their spirits down and they continue to put in the work and spend hours practicing and watching VODs to learn and improve for future matches, which has proven to be worthwhile after this victory.  They hope to use this as momentum going forward into future matches.

Varsity Overwatch was supposed to compete against Penn State University (PSU White) but the match got postponed to Tuesday February 17th, 2026.
