New Haven Takes Two of Three at Reigning NEC Champion St. Francis on the Road

LORETTO, Pa. — New Haven softball had a mixed series against Saint Francis at Red Flash SB Field, with the Chargers falling to the Red Flash 6-3 in the final game but clinching victories in the first two matchups, winning 10-7 and 9-5 over the weekend.

On Saturday, New Haven clinched a 10-7 win over Saint Francis. Brianna True led the charge with a home run as the team hit five total homers. Saint Francis initially took the lead with home runs from Garroway and Zielinski, making it 2-0. New Haven responded in the second inning with a homer from Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy), narrowing the score to 2-1.

In a back-and-forth game, the Chargers managed to tie the game at 6-6 in the sixth inning thanks to Kylie Thorpe's (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) solo homer and Sarah Syden's (Albany, N.Y./Shaker) three-run blast. After a late rally by Saint Francis put them ahead 7-6, New Haven leveled again at 7-7 in the seventh with a double by True. The Chargers then surged ahead in the eighth with a three-run inning, highlighted by Murai's second homer of the game, securing a 10-7 victory.

Katie Rhodes (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) pitched 4 innings, allowing 4 hits and 3 earned runs, while Sullivan closed the game scorelessly, helping New Haven secure the win. Murai finished with three hits and three RBIs in a standout performance.

New Haven continued their success with a 9-5 victory over Saint Francis. The Chargers capitalized on five fielding errors from the Red Flash and recorded 12 hits.

New Haven took the lead in the first inning with a double by Jess Petit, scoring Kylie Thorpe (Taunton, Mass./Taunton). The Chargers extended their lead with runs in the third and fourth innings, including a sacrifice fly from Allison Murai (Sammamish, WA/Skyline High School). Despite Saint Francis tying the game at 5-5 in the sixth with a three-run homer, New Haven rallied in the seventh with a four-run inning, led by Alivia Imbimbo's (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) double.

Cecelia Imbimbo (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) pitched 6 innings, allowing 8 hits and 5 earned runs, while Sullivan preserved the lead in the final inning.

On Sunday, New Haven fell to Saint Francis 6-3. The Chargers struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities despite recording six hits. Saint Francis took an early lead with a two-run triple and extended it with a pivotal four-run sixth inning.

New Haven scored in the sixth with Marzia Johnson's (Branford, Conn./Branford) double, but Saint Francis responded with a two-run homer and a couple of runs from defensive errors, leading to a 6-1 advantage. The Chargers mounted a rally in the seventh, scoring twice, but ultimately couldn't close the gap.

Cecelia Imbimbo (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) pitched 5 innings, allowing 6 hits and 6 runs, while Peyton Sullivan (Savona, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) pitched effectively in relief.

New Haven will travel to face Quinnipiac University on Wednesday, March 18, at 2 p.m. in Hamden, Conn.
