WEST HAVEN, Conn. — New Haven softball fell to Yale 8-1 on Wednesday at home, struggling offensively with just four hits against Yale's pitching. Yale took control early, scoring five runs in the first inning, which set the tone for the game.
Yale's initial lead came from a five-run first inning. Elena Ohe drove in two runs with a single to right field, and Grace Westmoreland scored on a catching error. Ellie Joseph then stole home, putting Yale up 5-0 by the end of the inning. In the second inning, Yale added another run as Ohe's RBI single brought in Libby Peoples, extending the lead to 6-0.
The fourth inning saw Yale increase its advantage to 7-0 when Peoples scored on Kaitlyn Oikle's single to left field. New Haven got on the board in the fifth inning when
Bri Pellicone (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a shortstop error after a Jess Petit single. The inning ended with Yale leading 8-1, which remained the final score as the game concluded scorelessly through the sixth and seventh innings.
Peyton Sullivan (Savona, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) started for the Chargers, pitching 1 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs, and issuing two walks on 48 pitches, resulting in the loss.
Katie Rhodes (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) provided relief, pitching three innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with one walk on 56 pitches.
Cecelia Imbimbo (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) closed the game, pitching three innings and allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out none on 49 pitches.
Jess Petit led the Chargers offensively with two hits and an RBI.
Bri Pellicone (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) added a hit and a run.
Katie Rhodes (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) demonstrated resilience on the mound, pitching three innings and allowing two earned runs on seven hits.
Cecelia Imbimbo (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) provided three innings of relief, surrendering one earned run.
