NEW HAVEN, Conn. — New Haven Softball fell to Yale 9-6 on Wednesday at 5K Corral Field. The Chargers' offense was highlighted by four doubles among its seven total hits.
Yale took an early lead in the first inning, scoring three runs. Jane Littleton and Libby Peoples each hit RBI doubles, and Peoples later stole home, giving Yale a 3-0 advantage.
In the third inning, New Haven got on the board when
Bri Pellicone (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) doubled and later scored on a single by Jess Petit. Yale responded with two runs, as Grace Westmoreland and Isabella Fortini each contributed RBIs, making the score 6-1 in favor of Yale.
New Haven narrowed the gap in the fourth inning, scoring three runs. Pellicone doubled to drive in a run, and
Gianna Haniff (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) added a two-RBI single, cutting the deficit to 6-4. Yale did not score in the bottom half of the inning.
In the fifth inning, the Chargers tied the game temporarily. Petit doubled and was driven in by a double from
Brianna Trueman (Trout Run, Pa./Montoursville Area), who later scored on a wild pitch. However, Yale countered with three runs, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Fortini, regaining a 9-6 lead.
The game ended with neither team scoring in the sixth and seventh innings, resulting in a final score of Yale 9, New Haven 6.
Skylar Griffin (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) started on the mound, pitching 3 innings and allowing 5 earned runs on 7 hits, with 1 walk and 1 hit by pitch.
Peyton Sullivan (Savona, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) relieved Griffin and pitched 2 innings, surrendering 3 earned runs on 2 hits while striking out 2 batters and issuing 1 walk.
Cecelia Imbimbo (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) closed the game by pitching a scoreless inning on just 6 pitches, 5 of which were strikes.
Bri Pellicone (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) recorded two hits and two runs, adding one RBI with a pair of doubles.
Gianna Haniff (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) contributed one hit and two RBIs while drawing a walk. Jess Petit added to the offense with two hits, including a double, and one run scored.
Brianna Trueman (Trout Run, Pa./Montoursville Area) tallied one hit, one RBI, and one run, also hitting a double.
