New Haven Throttles Delaware State, Finishes Year Winning Three of Final Four

DOVER, Del. — New Haven Lacrosse (5-9, 4-5) secured a decisive 19-7 victory over Delaware State University (0-17, 0-9) on Saturday in a road game. The Chargers dominated with a season-high 19 goals, including a remarkable five player-up goals, while their defense held Delaware State to just seven goals on 22 shots. New Haven capitalized on its shooting accuracy, with 27 shots on goal out of 37 total attempts. Meanwhile, Delaware State struggled to maintain possession, committing 10 turnovers during the game.

New Haven opened the first quarter with decisive play, as Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) secured the initial draw control. Sophia Devaney (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) scored the first goal at 14:19, assisted by Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton), who has now recorded seven or more assists in two consecutive games. The team capitalized on a player-up opportunity with a free-position goal by Sophia Minnion (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) at 13:57, extending their early lead. Despite a response from Delaware State with a goal by Ceanna McGirt at 13:04, New Haven quickly regained momentum. Taryn Murphy's (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) player-up goal at 12:27, again assisted by Seleny, highlighted New Haven's effective player-up strategy. Helena Dunwoody (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) and Minnion each added to the tally, with Minnion marking her second goal at 10:01. New Haven's solid offense continued with Minnion, who achieved a season-high of five goals, scoring again at 6:40. The quarter concluded with New Haven leading 6-1.

The Chargers surged ahead in the second quarter, with Sophia Devaney (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) opening the scoring at 14:23. The offensive momentum continued as Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) converted a free-position shot just under a minute later. Despite Delaware State's Genesya Spann narrowing the gap at 12:22, New Haven responded decisively. Sophia Minnion (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) added two goals, with assists from Helena Dunwoody (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) and Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton), while Kendall Morrill (Plaistow, N.H./Timberlane Regional) and Maren Lowell (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) each found the back of the net. Helena Dunwoody (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) capped the quarter with a player-up goal at 00:12, solidifying New Haven's dominance. The quarter ended with New Haven leading 14-3.

New Haven opened the third quarter with a strong offensive push. Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) caused a turnover and quickly converted it into a goal at 9:48. Following this, Ellie Wilson (Longmont, Colo./Longmont) scored another goal with an assist from Seleny at 7:42, further extending the lead. New Haven continued to control the quarter with efficient play, as Sophia Devaney (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) netted a goal assisted by Seleny at 3:06. Despite attempts by Delaware State to regain momentum, New Haven maintained its advantage, closing the quarter with a 17-4 lead.

In the fourth quarter, New Haven mounted a strong response after Delaware State initially increased its score with a goal by Madden Alexander at 14:22. With a player-up advantage, Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) scored at 3:24. Olivia Kaelin (Shoreham, NY/Longwood), assisted by Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton), furthered New Haven's efforts with a goal at 2:20. Despite a late goal by Taylor Weston for Delaware State at 1:11, New Haven maintained its lead. The game concluded with a final score of New Haven 19, Delaware State 7.
