WEST HAVEN, Conn. – New Haven Men's Basketball Head Coach Ted Hotaling has announced the addition of Greg Schiefen to his coaching staff as an assistant coach.
Schiefen, who comes from Gordon State in Barnesville, Ga., brings more than a decade of collegiate coaching experience to the Blue & Gold. In his first season with the Highlanders, Schiefen led a 15-win improvement over the previous year. He engineered one of the top program turnarounds in NJCAA Division I, leading Gordon State to 34 wins in two seasons after the program totaled just 9 wins in the two seasons prior to his arrival. His tenure at Gordon State features a 15-win improvement in year one — the largest turnaround in NJCAA Division I during the 2024–25 season.
Schiefen also led Gordon State to back-to-back GCAA Final Four appearances and consecutive playoff victories for the first time in 15 years. Finished 2nd in the GCAA after being projected 7th in year one and 4th after being projected 5th in year two. Established a school-record 10-game winning streak and recorded the second-most overall wins among Georgia NJCAA programs in 2024–25.
While at Gordon State, Schiefen developed four All-Conference selections, including three First Team honorees, along with one All-Freshman selection and two GCAA All-Tournament selections. Schiefen recruited and developed a 1,000-point scorer and successfully advanced every student-athlete in the program to a four-year institution, including 3 NCAA Division I players. The Highlanders led the GCAA in 3-point field-goal percentage defense while building a culture of accountability, player development, and academic achievement, including multiple semesters with a 3.0 team GPA.
In 2025-26, Schiefen oversaw the development of the 37th-ranked JUCO player in the country, Christian Burnett, as well as Donovan Hand, who fell just outside the top 100 players.
Schiefen was hired at Gordon State following a successful season on staff at Chipola College. During the 2023–24 campaign, Schiefen helped guide the Indians to a 29–5 record, the Panhandle Conference regular season championship, the Florida State Tournament title, and a No. 6 overall seed in the NJCAA National Tournament.
Before his time at Chipola, Schiefen spent six seasons at Georgia Highlands College, serving as both assistant coach and later associate head coach. During his tenure, the Chargers became one of the most respected programs in NJCAA Division I, capturing GCAA regular season titles in 2017, 2021, and 2022 and 2023 while achieving seven consecutive Top-25 national rankings, peaking as high as No. 2. At Georgia Highlands, he was instrumental in recruiting and developing talent, with over 25 of his players moving on to NCAA Division I and II programs.
Schiefen's coaching career also includes significant NCAA and junior college experience. He served as an assistant coach at Misericordia University, where he contributed to the program's MAC Freedom Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 2016. Prior to Misericordia, he was the top assistant at Alfred University, where he helped the Saxons reach the Empire 8 Conference Championship game in 2015. His early collegiate coaching roots were built at Corning Community College, where he began his career working with NJCAA student-athletes.
A native of Elmira, New York, Schiefen was a standout multi-sport athlete at Notre Dame High School, later earning induction into the school's Hall of Fame. He continued his playing career at SUNY Brockport, where he was a four-year letterwinner in basketball. At Brockport, he earned a degree in Sports Management with a minor in Athletic Coaching, competing on teams that won a SUNYAC Championship and made both NCAA Tournament and ECAC postseason appearances.
