New Haven opens season at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The New Haven women's soccer team (0-1-0) suffered a 5-0 defeat against Stony Brook (1-0-1) on Sunday at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Despite the loss, the Chargers' goalie, Trinitie Maloney (Brick, N.J./Brick Township High School), recorded six saves over the course of the match.

New Haven began the first half by focusing on creating offensive opportunities, with Mariana Alves taking a shot in the 31st minute. Despite a corner kick shortly after, Caitlin Barry's (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur High School) attempt went wide. Maloney made a crucial save against Stony Brook's Camryn Goodman to keep the game scoreless early on.

Stony Brook managed to break through in the 35th minute with a goal by Allison George, assisted by Emanuelly Ferreira. The home team extended its lead shortly after with Eva Sprewell scoring in the 37th minute. New Haven had a late chance to close the gap with a shot by Gianna DeSantis (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell High School), but it was saved by Jona Hennings. The period concluded with Stony Brook leading 2-0.

Stony Brook capitalized early in the second half with a goal by Hedvig Helling in the 48th minute, assisted by Maya Corbett and Camryn Goodman. New Haven's defense, led by goalkeeper Maloney, faced continuous pressure, yet Maloney registered several crucial saves, including stopping a penalty shot attempt by Emily Lemke shortly after Helling's goal.

Despite Maloney's efforts, Stony Brook extended its advantage with a penalty kick conversion by Lemke in the 54th minute. New Haven attempted to respond offensively, highlighted by a shot from Kelsey Landers (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) that was saved by Marissa Read. The period concluded with Stony Brook adding another goal by Leah Rifas in the 86th minute, bringing the final score to 5-0 in favor of Stony Brook.

Maloney recorded six saves in the match, facing a total of 28 shots. DeSantis managed to register a shot on goal, contributing to the team's offensive efforts. Barry also added a shot to the team's tally, though it was not on target. Landers contributed with one shot on goal, providing pressure on the opposition's defense.

Looking ahead, the Chargers will travel to face Brown University in their next game. The match is set for Thursday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. at Stevenson-Pincince Field in Providence, Rhode Island.
