New Haven Travels to Brown for Second Match of the Season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — New Haven women's soccer (0-2-0, 0-0-0) suffered a 4-0 defeat against Brown (1-0-0, 0-0-0) on Thursday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field. Brown's offense dominated with four goals, while the Chargers managed one shot on goal throughout the match.

The match began with New Haven's Jordan Galica (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) in goal, facing an early challenge from Brown's offense. Despite Brown's initial pressure, including a save by Galica in the second minute, New Haven's defense held firm in the early exchanges. However, Brown managed to break through in the 7th minute with a goal by Angelina Vargas, assisted by Naomi Nnewihe, establishing an early lead.

As the first half progressed, New Haven worked to regain momentum but was unable to capitalize offensively. Brown continued to press, recording multiple corner kicks and shots, but New Haven's defense, led by Galica, managed to prevent further scoring. The first half concluded with the Chargers trailing 1-0.

The second half began with Brown capitalizing on its momentum. Despite New Haven's defensive efforts, including multiple saves by Galica, Brown broke through in the 64th minute with a goal by Kyra Treanor, assisted by Claire Silverman, to extend its lead.

The Blue & Gold attempted to respond with a shot by Maria Lobo (Porto, Portugal/Escola Secundaria Fontes Pereira de Melo), but Brown maintained control. Taylor Green added another goal for Brown in the 76th minute, assisted by Kyra Treanor and Joy Okonye. New Haven's defense continued to fend off further advances, but Brown sealed the match with a final goal by Georgia Steinbach in the 89th minute. The match concluded with Brown leading 4-0.

Jordan Galica (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) recorded five saves during the match, facing a total of 20 shots. Maria Lobo (Porto, Portugal/Escola Secundaria Fontes Pereira de Melo) managed to take one of the few shots for the Chargers, as the team struggled offensively. Despite the efforts, New Haven was unable to find the back of the net.

Up next, New Haven will host Monroe University on Friday, Aug. 21, at Kathy Zolad Stadium in West Haven, Conn. The game will begin at 6 p.m. as the Chargers continue their season on home turf.
