FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Andres Lazo (Montville, N.J./Montville) scored his team leading thoird goal of the season, however the New Haven men's soccer team lost to Fairfield 2-1 on Saturday Night at Lessing Field.
After Fairfield converted a penalty kick in the first minute of the match, New Haven generated nine shots and five corner kicks but went into halftime down 1-0. Following the goal, New Haven responded quickly, with
Londell Wheeler (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) forcing a save at 2:35 and the visitors earning four corners before the 10-minute mark while Lazo also put a shot toward goal. The pressure continued from 16:57 to 24:59 as
Ali Taleb (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) and Wheeler had shots saved,
Valerio Del Mastro (Rome, Italy/Istituto Cellini) and Lazo missed attempts, and the Chargers added another corner.
Christopher Nguyen (San Jose, Calif./Advantages Online School) made two saves to limit Fairfield's chances, and New Haven closed the half with late shots from
Bakir Omercevic (Utica, N.Y./Thomas R. Proctor),
Pol Bota Gutierrez (Girona, Spain/Verduna Girona) and Wheeler before the segment ended with Fairfield ahead 1-0.
New Haven struck early in the second half, as Lazo finished a
Lukian Lawro (Albertson, N.Y./Mineola) assist at 46:32 to tie the match at 1-1. After a corner in the 48th minute,
Trevor Pegg (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Lawro each generated shots, and
Luke Fiscella (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) later hit the top woodwork in the 64th minute. Fairfield went back in front at 74:31 after Nguyen saved Marques Nana-Sinkam's shot moments earlier, leaving the Chargers down 2-1. The Chargers pushed through the final 10 minutes with four corners and three shots, including saved attempts by
Matheus Guimaraes () and Bota Gutierrez and a late
Kai Herd (Newcastle, Australia/St. Phillip's Christian College Newcastle) shot, but the match ended with Fairfield ahead 2-1.
Lazo scored a game-tying goal and finished with three shots. Lawro recorded an assist and added one shot. Wheeler placed all three of his shots on goal. Nguyen played all 90 minutes in his first start in goal for New Haven and made three saves.
