NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The University of New Haven men's soccer team dropped their New Haven Derby to Yale 2-0 on Tuesday Night at Reese Stadium.
Shane Antao (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) highlighted the night for the Chargers making nine saves in the loss.
The Chargers kept the Elis scoreless for more than 36 minutes despite sustained pressure, but David Leidl scored from Billy Altirs at 36:16 to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Earlier, Antao helped keep the match scoreless during the Bulldogs' opening push, saving shots from Salif Leintu and Teague McCammon before the Bulldogs also earned two corners in the first 10 minutes. The Chargers began to create chances midway through the half, with
Andres Lazo (Montville, N.J./Montville) and
Ali Taleb (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) recording shots before
Aiden Williams-McCracken (West Stockbridge, Mass./South Kent) put a shot on frame in the 29th minute and added another attempt in the 33rd minute around back-to-back Chargers corners. Antao added three more saves during the middle stretch, including stops 8 seconds apart in the 29th minute. New Haven earned a pair of late corners in the half but remained behind 1-0 at halftime.
The Chargers faced an early second-half push from the Bulldogs, with Antao making two saves in the first three minutes before Dijon Fosu scored from Sven Meacham in the 52nd minute to make it 2-0. New Haven answered with attempts from
Lukian Lawro (Albertson, N.Y./Mineola) and Lazo, then built more pressure after the hour mark with a corner kick and shots from Lazo,
Richard Henry (Minard Hill, St. Ann, Jamaica/Edwin Allen), and
Vinicius Lemke (Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil/Colégio Marista). Antao added another save in the 55th minute, and the Chargers later withstood a Bulldogs stretch that included a shot off the woodwork and another Antao stop in the 84th minute. New Haven kept pressing late, earning corner kicks in the 85th and 88th minutes and getting a final shot from Henry in the 89th, but the half ended with the Elis ahead 2-0.
Antao recorded nine saves over 90 minutes, making five in the first half and four in the second. Antao's nine saves were a career best and the most by a New Haven goalie this season. Lazo led the Chargers with four shots and put one attempt on goal.
Up next, New Haven will host LIU on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 6 p.m. at Kathy Zolad Stadium in West Haven, Conn.
