Michael Mortali enters his 13th season on the University of New Haven football staff in 2024 and will work with the running backs. An offensive specialist, during his tenure at New Haven, he has coached the wide receivers, running backs and tight ends under two head coaches – Pete Rossomando and Chris Pincince.
In the 12 years Mortali has been at New Haven, the Chargers have amassed a 97-37 record, have won four Northeast-10 Conference Championships, including back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012 and advanced to the NCAA Division II Playoffs six times, including advancing to the quarterfinal round in 2011.
Under his leadership, a pair of Chargers have earned major Northeast-10 Conference awards highlighted by Andre Anderson who in addition to being named the NE10 Most Valuable Player was named an All-American from both USA College Football and D2Football.com. Joining Anderson in earning a major league award was Shamar Logan who was tabbed the Rookie of the Year in 2019.
Overall, seven players under his tutelage have earned a spot on NE10 All-Conference teams including Anderson in 2015 and 2016 as well as a three-time honoree in Mike DeCaro who earned second team honors in 2011 and back-to-back first team distinction in 2012 and 13. In addition to his 2012 first team honor, DeCaro led the Chargers to the second-ranked rushing offense and third ranked total offense in the NE10 that season.
A 2011 graduate from Sacred Heart University, Mortali earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Marketing with a concentration in Sports Marketing. He played strong safety for the Pioneers from 2007 to 2010 and also suited up for the lacrosse team.
Mortali is the son of Associate Head Coach and Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Tony Mortali, Sr.
