Scott James joined the Charger Football coaching staff on January 17, 2008, one month after the program was reinstated after a five-year absence. This season, he will begin his 14th season as a college coach.

James’ defense led the Northeast-10 Conference with 36 sacks, including a league-best 12 by defensive end Tom Herd. UNH also ranked second in the conference in fewest points allowed per game. Five defenders were named to the All-Region teams, while Desmond Anderson, Tom Herd and Charlie Hatchett each were recognized as Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Americans.

In 2010, James’ defense led the Northeast-10 Conference in sacks, while having five earn a spot on the All-Conference teams. The Chargers’ defense also ranked second in the conference in rushing defense and helped New Haven lead the conference in turnover margin. Cornerback Desmond Anderson was named Don Hansen Football Gazette All-American Honorable Mention as well.

In 2009, James managed a young defense which had two freshmen named to the All-Northeast-10 Conference Second Team (Mike Gomes and Raheem Stanley). As the Chargers’ defensive coordinator, James oversees the team’s multiple defensive schemes, while coaching inside linebackers as well.

In 2008, James began the recruiting process which helped rebuild the Charger Football program. James recruits areas throughout New England, New York City, Westchester County, Orange County and Rockland County.

Prior to coming to UNH, James served as the outside linebackers coach at Northeastern University for three seasons (2005-07). In 2006, James led a group of Huskies that produced 9.5 sacks. James spent his first season as the Huskies’ defensive tackles coach and video coordinator.

Before his arrival at Northeastern, James served two seasons as an assistant coach at Boston College, working with a talented group of linebackers under head coach Tom O’Brien. James worked closely with players such as Brian Toal, the 2004 Big East Rookie of the Year and a Freshman All-American, and Ray Henderson, a second team All-Big East selection. During his time with the Eagles, the team brought home bowl victories in the Diamond Walnut Bowl (2003) and the Continental Tire Bowl (2004).

Prior to arriving in Boston, James, spent one season at College of the Holy Cross, working with the defensive ends in 2002.

He spent the 2001 season alongside Rossomando at the University at Albany, serving as defensive tackles coach and helping the Great Danes to a 7-3 record in their third season of Division I football.

His first coaching job was at his alma mater, Norwich University, in 1999 and 2000. There, he oversaw the defensive line and strength and conditioning program.

James graduated from Norwich in 1999 with a degree in Sports Medicine and received his master’s in Curriculum Development and Instructional Technologies from UAlbany in 2002. He collected a second master’s in Administrative Studies from Boston College in 2005.
