The 2024 season will mark the 38th season Tomy Mortali has strolled the sidelines at New Haven after making his return to the New Haven coaching staff for the 2012 season after previously spending 27 years with the program. During the program’s hiatus which began in 2002, Mortali spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Sacred Heart (2004-09) where he worked as an offensive assistant, assisting with the wide receivers and handled team operations.
From 2008-11, Mortali also worked concurrently with the Miami Dolphins under Head Coach Tony Sparano, a former head coach for the Chargers. With the Dolphins, his duties ranged from assistant to the head coach, warming up quarter backs on game days, defensive charting and various team equipment needs.
A 1976 New Haven graduate, with a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Mortali played on both sides of the ball as an offensive guard and as a linebacker for the Chargers. After the 1975 season, Mortali was named to the All-New England Conference first team as a linebacker. He captained the Chargers in 1975 and 1976, and became the university’s first football/lacrosse player to be inducted into the UNH Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987.
Mortali resides in Branford, CT with his wife Sandy, sons Anthony and Michael and daughter Alicia, a 2017 New Haven graduate and women’s lacrosse player.
