Derrick Seldon

Seldon joined the men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach for the 2021-22 season and comes to New Haven with experience at the high school and collegiate level, including two seasons as an assistant coach at Western Connecticut State University.

A graduate of Western Connecticut, Seldon was a two year started for the Colonials after transferring from Susquehanna University. In his two seasons at WCSU, Seldon averaged over seven points per game and served as a captain for the Colonials in his senior campaign, 2014-15. Off the court, Seldon was a standout in the classroom, earning Male Scholar Athlete of the Year honors and was a nominee for the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America Team.

Following his collegiate career, Seldon went on to play professional in Europe in 2016 and was invited to try out for both the NBL Canada Windsor Express and the Maine Red Claws of the NBA G-league. A native of Bloomfield, Conn., Seldon played at Northwest Catholic High School in West Hartford, Conn. where he helped lead the Lions to a State Championship runner-up finish in 2011.

Prior to joining Hotaling’s staff at New Haven, Seldon served as an assistant coach for the varsity boy’s basketball team at Maloney High School where he helped lead the Spartans to a perfect 12-0 record and a top-10 ranking during the 2020-21 season which was shortened due to the CoVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to Maloney, Seldon spent two seasons at his alma mater, serving as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams during the 2016-17 season and returning for the 2017-18 season as an assistant for the men’s program under head coach Jason Harlow.
