Joel Smith

Joel Smith enters his second season with the Chargers in 2019-20. He came to New Haven following two seasons at his alma mater Northeastern, where he served on Bill Coen's staff as video coordinator.

Following his first season under head coach Ted Hotaling in which he helped lead the Chargers to the semifinal round of the Division II East Region Championship, Smith was named to the NABC Under Armour 30-Under-30 Team as one of the 30 best basketball coaches under the age of 30. 

Smith finished his career at Northeastern as the 13th highest scorer in Husky history with 1,328 career points knocking down 243 career three-pointers, then-second-most in school history. Among his 243 career threes were 83 which came during the 2012-13 season setting a single season school record. Additionally, his career three point field goal percentage of 39.9 percent ranks third all-time at Northeastern.

The sharp shooter and Leander, Texas native was named to the Colonial Athletic Association First Team All-Conference in his senior season and helped the Huskies to two NIT appearances during his time on Huntington Ave.

Following his graduation from Northeastern, Smith played professionally in Argentina and Mexico, before being drafted in the fourth round of the D-League draft by the Canton Charge.
