Tobe Carberry

Tobe Carberry is in his fourth season as an assistant coach for Ted Hotaling. Carberry is an integral part of all facets of the program, including on-court instruction, recruiting, scouting and academic monitoring.

Last winter, the Chargers posted a 20-9 record – their first 20-win campaign since 2003-04. New Haven reached the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2004 and earned its first win on the national stage with a victory over Dominican in the NCAA Division II East Region Quarterfinals. The Chargers’ 16-6 conference record and third-place regular-season finish were both the best for the team since joining the Northeast-10.

In 2011-12, Carberry was on the sidelines as the Chargers posted a 15-13 record - a seven-win improvement from the previous campaign and the club's first winning season since 2004-05 - en route to an appearance in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Quarterfinals.

Carberry came to New Haven in 2010-11 after spending three seasons as the top assistant coach at Southern Connecticut State University. While at SCSU, Carberry helped with player development, academics and recruiting. His main on-court responsibility was the guards, including a Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team selection. Academically, he helped improve the team grade-point average to its best cumulative mark in a decade.

After a standout career at the University of Vermont, Carberry spent five years in professional basketball leagues in the U.S. and Europe, including the NBA Development League.

At his alma mater, Carberry ranked 13th on the all-time scoring list with 1,235 points and also ranked in the top 10 in games played, field goals, assists, steals and blocked shots at the conclusion of his career. Carberry was also a finalist in the 12th Annual National Slam Dunk contest at the Final Four in Indianapolis in 2000 and was awarded the 2000 New England Division I Unsung Hero Award by the New England Basketball Coaches Association.

A James Hillhouse High School graduate, Carberry has been the Director of Summer Basketball Camp for the Connecticut Skills Camp since 2003.

Carberry earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Sociology from the UVM in 2000. He also participated in the University of New Haven's Outstanding High School Seniors Program in 1996.
