Don Hathorn

Don Hathorn enters his fourth season as the head coach of the University of New Haven men’s soccer team in August 2018 with a New Haven record of 13-35-3. 

In 2016, Hathorn matched the most wins in a single season since 2012 with six, as he mentored three student-athletes who were named to the NE10 All-Conference Team, including Rob Poirier (Third Team), Pablo Perez (Third Team, All-Rookie Team), and Nate Peduzzi (All-Rookie Team). The team also started the season with three consecutive wins for the second-straight season.

imageIn his first season in 2015, the Chargers doubled their win total from the previous year and started the season with three consecutive wins for the first time since 1998. Senior J.P DiTommaso was named a Third Team Academic All-American and junior Oscar Johannesson was named Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference. Additionally, two players were selected Northeast-10 All-Conference performers as Stephen Sasso was recognized as a Second Team member while Mawasi Charles was selected to the All-Rookie Team. 

Hathorn brings a NCAA Division I coaching background along with head coaching experience with him to New Haven. In his most recent stop prior to joining the Blue and Gold, Hathorn was the top assistant at Iona College where he oversaw recruiting and assisted in all aspects of the program. While in New Rochelle, the Gaels compiled a record of 19-12-6 and reached the MAAC semifinals in 2014. He mentored 12 All-MAAC Honorees and Iona received the NSCAA Team Academic Award in 2013-14. Prior to his stint with the Gaels, Hathorn was the lead assistant for a Niagara University.

Hathorn spent the 2010 season as assistant men’s soccer coach at Valparaiso University in Indiana where he assisted in team training, recruiting, game management, scouting, fundraising, summer camps and academic mentoring of student-athletes. The 2010 Crusaders placed three members on All-Horizon League team and the team was a recipient of the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the eighth straight year.

Prior to Valparaiso, Hathorn coached at Division II Regis University in Denver, Colo. from 2008-2010. He served as interim head coach and assistant coach during his three seasons with the Rangers. Hathorn coached four All-Central Region First Team and three All-RMCA First Team selections as the team combined for a 17-14-6 overall record.

Hathorn began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz. where he oversaw the goalkeepers. He was also the director of coaching for the Flagstaff United Soccer Club.

Additionally, during his career, the Maine native has coached three players that have either been drafted or signed contracts with Major League Soccer teams. The list includes Ignacio Maganto, the No. 21 overall pick by the L.A. Galaxy in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.

As a player, Hathorn competed for four seasons at Siena College, where he was a three-time MAAC All-Academic honoree. 

He is a 2003 graduate of Siena with a degree in marketing and management. In 2009, he earned his MBA from Northern Arizona.
