Alexandria Earl-Givan

As a former All-American and U.S. National Team competitor who recently completed her 13th season with the Chargers in 2019-20, Alexandra Earl-Givan brings a wealth of collegiate and international experience to University of New Haven coaching staff.

At New Haven, Earl-Givan is primarily responsible for coaching the throwers. During the 2019-20 indoor season, Jonathan Pierre had the No. 2 weight throw in the East Region. During the 2018-19 season, Earl-Givan mentored Michael Kandolin who qualified for the NCAA Championships in the hammer throw, and placed second in the hammer and third in the discus at the NE10 Outdoor Championships. Kandolin captured the NE10 Indoor title and broke the school record in the weight throw. She coached Alanna Robinson to a third place All-New England finish in the hammer throw during outdoors, and a runner-up showing in the weight throw at the NE10 Indoor Championships.

In 2018, Earl-Givan coached three All-Conference performers, including two-time (2017, 2018) hammer throw and one-time weight throw champion, Michael Kandolin who was also the runner-up in the discus in 2018 (150’2”) and Alanna Robinson who placed third in the shot put (44’6”). In the hammer throw in the 2017 outdoor conference championship, Kandolin reached throw of 177’3”.  
 
In her earlier years at New Haven, Earl-Givan led Shraya Manick to an NE10 Championship in 2013 in the weight throw with a throw of 52’6.75”. The after, she coached Camille Charles to an NE10 Championship in the hammer throw (149’5” and Briana Conyers to a heptathlon championship in the outdoor season.

Earl-Givan earned a Bachelor’s degree from Southern Connecticut State University in 1994.  She was a four-year member of SCSU’s track and field program, where she was a standout in the throwing events. She was also a three-time NCAA Division II All-American in the shot put, and was Connecticut’s Collegiate Athlete of the Year in both 1993 and 1995.

She won a medal at the 1995 Pan-American Games and had the American women’s best distance in the hammer throw. That season, she also competed at the 1992 Olympic Trials.  While competing in the hammer throw at the U.S. National Championships, Earl-Givan placed second twice (1992, 1994) and third once (1995).

Earl-Givans also works as Connecticut Special Olympics Local Coordinator for New Haven Schools, where she has worked since 1996. She organizes athletic programs for special education students with the general student population, recruiting coaches and athletes and overseeing all aspects of the program administration.

She has also worked since 2000 as a sports clinician for USA Track & Field Connecticut’s Extreme Technique Field Event Workshops. Earl-Givan currently resides in New Haven.
