(10-10-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated the Le Moyne College Dolphins 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-19) Saturday night at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers improve to 14-4 overall and remain perfect at 7-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference, Le Moyne falls to 11-5 overall and 3-3 in the NE-10.
The Chargers found themselves down 14-12 in the opening set Saturday afternoon. They then went on a 4-0 run to take a 16-14 lead. One point later they went on a 3-0 run to take a 19-15 lead and eventually they went on a 5-0 run to close the set with a kill from freshman Tymika Duncan.
After playing rather close to open the second set, the Chargers once again used rallies later in the match to take larger leads. UNH went on a 3-0 run late to turn a 19-15 lead into a 22-15 spread. Six points later Sara Malmlov put down an ace to give the Chargers a two-set lead in the match.
In the final set, the Chargers once again fell behind early at 5-3. They battled back behind the serving of Heather Ladao to score four unanswered points and take a 7-5 lead. Later in the set, a Le Moyne service error gave the Chargers an 11-9 lead, which they turned into 17-9 lead with six straight points, including two aces from Duncan. The Chargers then cruised to the 25-19 set and match victory.
Malmlov led the Chargers with 14 kills and just one error on 22 attempts (.591 hitting percentage). She also grabbed five digs, an ace and a block assist. Duncan added six kills on seven attempts with no errors for a .857 hitting percentage. She also grabbed four blocks, two aces and three digs. Chelsey Alpough handed out 28 assists, while Ladao led the back row with 14 digs and three aces.
The Chargers return to action on Monday, October 12 when they host Florida Southern College at 5 p.m. at Charger Gymnasium.
