(10-14-09) BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated the University of Bridgeport 3-2 (26-24, 20-25, 17-25, 25-16, 15-10) Wednesday night. With the win the Chargers improve to 16-4 on the season, while Bridgeport falls to 23-4.
In the first set, the Chargers and Purple Knights found themselves tied at 22-22 late in the set. Bridgeport then scored two straight to take a 24-22 lead. The Chargers then went on a 4-0 run, to capture the opening set victory 26-24. Sophomore Chelsey Alpough served the final three points, including the set-winning ace.
UNH led most of the beginning half of the second set, but Bridgport eventually scored four unanswered points and took a 15-12 lead. The Purple Knights went on a few more scoring runs before taking the 25-20 set victory.
Bridgeport controlled most of the third set Wednesday, after taking an early 9-7 lead. They led 16-12 before scoring four unanswered points to take a 20-12 lead. Bridgeport went on to take a 25-17 win in set three.
The Chargers rebounded in a fourth set victory, thanks to a number of scoring runs throughout the set. UHN led 12-10 before serving by Tia Inong helped the Chargers open a 15-10 lead. After a side out, Heather Ladao served three straight points, including two aces, to give UNH an 18-11 lead. Later in the set, Tymika Duncan hammered down a kill to give New Haven a 24-16 lead and a Purple Knight error gave UNH the 25-16 win.
The final set belonged to the Chargers, who started the set by scoring eight of the first nine points. Chelsey Alpough served seven consecutive points during the stretch. Following an 8-1 lead, the teams exchanged points for the remainder of the set before a Duncan and Keidy Candelaria stopped a Purple Knight attack for the match-winning point.
Candelaria led the Chargers with 23 kills, while Sara Malmlov added 19 points. Malmlov led the team with a .419 hitting percentage and added 12 digs. Four other Chargers tallied double figure digs, including Ladao who grabbed a team-high 21 digs.
The Chargers return to action on Friday, October 16 when they travel to UMass Lowell for a NE-10 match. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
