(10-02-09) NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven football team fell 54-26 Friday night to Southern Connecticut State University at Jess Dow Field. The loss drops the Chargers to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Owls improve to 4-2 overall and 4-0 in the NE-10.
Southern scored on their opening drive off a seven play 66-yard drive in the opening three and a half minutes. With an extra point, SCSU took a 7-0 lead. The Chargers immediately answered, however, with their own 10-play 69-yard touchdown drive. Their extra point, brought the score even at 7-7.
The Owls added another touchdown on their next drive, taking a 14-7 lead off a 32-yard touchdown pass. The Chargers once again answered later in the first quarter when Sharieff Hall caught a 14-yard pass from Ryan Osiecki. The point after attempt failed and the Chargers trailed 14-13 with three seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Two second quarter SCSU touchdowns and tight defense gave the Owls a 28-13 lead at halftime.
After forcing a fumble and recovering it on the SCSU 11 yard line, Victor Jones capped a two-play 11-yard drive with a one yard touchdown run to cut the Southern lead to 28-19.
Over the next quarter and a half, the Owls scored 26 unanswered points to take a commanding 54-19 lead with 1:34 left in the fourth quarter. Osiecki led the Chargers down the field in the final minute and a half to give the Chargers seven more points in the 54-26 loss.
Osiecki led the Chargers offense with 386 passing yards and three touchdowns on 37-of-61 passing. Unfortunately the Chargers wide receivers dropped eight passes in the game as well. Sharieff Hall grabbed nine catches for 83 yards and a touchdown, while Jason Thompson tallied five catches for 101 yards and a touchdown. Osiecki also led the UNH rushing attack with 25 yards on three carries.
The Charger defense was led by Akaki Ramishvili with 11 total tackles and one sack, and Robert Hill with nine total tackles.
The Chargers return to action on Saturday, October 10 when they host American International College at DellaCamera Stadium at 1 p.m.
