(10-02-09) RINDGE, N.H. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Franklin Pierce University 3-0 Friday night. With their eighth straight win, the Chargers improve to 11-3 overall and 4-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference, the Ravens fall to 4-12 overall and 1-3 in the NE-10.
New Haven took immediate control in set one on Friday. They scored 10 of the first 16 points and eventually led by as many as 10 at 21-11. Freshman Tymika Duncan completed the 25-14 opening set victory when she put down a kill for the winning point.
In the second set, Franklin Pierce scored the set's first point, but the Chargers rallied back and took a 10-7 lead off a Janeeka Benson kill. Behind the serving of Chelsey Alpough, the Chargers scored four-straight and took a 16-10 lead. The teams exchanged points before UNH took a 21-15 lead. Tia Inong served out the Chargers final four-straight points for the 25-15 win.
The third set was all UNH, as they scored more than two points for each of the Ravens' points. They went on scoring runs of four, five and six to seal their fourth NE-10 win of the season. Keidy Candelaria hammered the final kill to give UNH the 25-11 win.
Sara Malmlov led the Chargers with 15 kills and only two errors on 30 attempts (.433 hitting percentage). The junior added 15 digs and two service aces. Candelaria added 10 kills and eight digs, while Alpough handed out 34 assists.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. when they host Southern New Hampshire University at Charger Gymnasium.
