(10-23-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Adelphi University 3-2 (26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-11) Friday evening at Charger Gymnasium. With the win the Chargers stay undefeated at 11-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference with four games remaining in the regular season. The Panthers fall to 9-1 in the NE-10 with the loss.
The Chargers took the opening set, after trailing 24-22 late in the set. Led by Heather Ladao's serving, UNH scored the final four points of the match to rally for the victory. UNH originally led by six points (19-13), before the Panthers rallied themselves and went on a 9-3 scoring spree.
The Chargers fell behind in the opening points of the second set and eventually trailed 16-10. UNH rallied and scored nine of the next 13 points to cut the Adelphi lead to 20-19. A UNH service error and Panther kill gave Adelphi the advantage and momentum as they sealed the 25-23 set victory.
UNH took the third set by a score of 25-21. The Chargers we down early in the set, but gradually took the lead and took a 19-13 lead off a Keidy Candelaria kill. The Panthers had a late surge, but UNH held on, while an Adelphi service error sealed the set for the Chargers.
The fourth set, was controlled by the Panthers, who took a 3-0 deficit and turned it into an 8-5 lead just 10 points later. An attack error gave Adelphi a 13-10 lead later in the set. The Panthers then went on a 9-3 run to open a 22-13 lead. Seven points later, the Panthers evened the match at 2-2 with a kill.
In the deciding set, the two teams played point-for-point for most of the first half of the 15-point set. UNH held a one-point 11-10 lead late. Led by two kills by Tymika Duncan and a match-winning kill from Elizabeth Akinbiyi, the Chargers kept their NE-10 record perfect with a 15-11 victory.
The Chargers were led by freshman Keidy Candelaria with 20 kills and six errors on 68 attempts (.206 hitting percentage). She added 17 digs and two blocks. Malmlov tallied 19 kills, 22 digs and two blocks, while Akinbiyi hammered down 12 kills and led the team with 10 total blocks.
Chelsey Alpough handed out 47 assists, while Ladao even Malmlov with 22 digs.
New Haven returns to the court on Friday, October 30 when they travel to Bentley University for a match at 7:30 p.m. The Chargers final home game takes place on Saturday, October 31 at 1 p.m. against Stonehill.
