(10-03-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Southern New Hampshire University in three sets Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium. New Haven improves to 12-3 overall and 5-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Penmen fall to 7-4 overall and 1-4 in the NE-10.
UNH took a 17-11 lead in the opening set and then freshman Keidy Candelaria came to the services spot and rattled off eight straight point to give New Haven the opening set victory.
In the much closer second set, the Chargers held a six-point 17-11 lead midway through the set. The Penmen scored nine of the next 12 points and tied UNH at 20-20. SNHU then scored another two points to take a 22-20 lead. However, the Chargers rallied and tied the set at 24-24. After going point-for-point, the Chargers eventually took a 28-26 victory off an attack error by the Penmen.
The third set started close, but then junior Sara Malmlov started to serve and the Chargers scored seven unanswered points to take a 12-6 lead. For most of the remainder of the set, the teams exchanged points before a SNHU service error sealed the Chargers ninth straight win.
Malmlov led the Chargers with 12 kills, while adding eight digs, three aces and two blocks. Candelaria dropped 11 kills, grabbed 12 digs and three aces as well. Freshman Tymika Duncan added five kills and no errors on 11 attempts (.455 hitting percentage).
Chelsey Alpough handed out 33 assists, tallied five digs and one block. Heather Ladao led the UNH back row with 14 digs in the match.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, October 6 when they travel to Southern Connecticut State University for a 7 p.m. match.
