(10-30-09) WALTHAM, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Bentley University 3-2 (25-18, 28-30, 22-25, 25-20, 15-10) Friday night in Massachusetts. The Chargers earn their eighth-straight win with the victory and improve to 12-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference (21-4 overall).
UNH controlled the first set, taking a seven-point, 25-18 victory. The next two sets UNH fell, including a 30-28 loss in the second set. The Chargers rebounded with a 25-20 win in the fourth set and a 15-10 win in the deciding set.
Junior Sara Malmlov concluded the match with a kill on the final point of the match. It was one of 22 kills Malmlov had on the night. She added 15 digs for the double-double and three block assists. The reigning Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Week, Keidy Candelaria, was second on the team with 17 kills. She added 20 digs and five aces on the night. Elizabeth Akinbiyi also helped the offense with 12 kills on 27 attempts with only two errors (.370 hitting percentage).
Setter for the match, Tia Inong tallied 52 assists and added 10 digs, while libero Heather Ladao led the team with 29 digs.
The Chargers out-hit the Falcons .233 to .144, while registering just one-less kill. UNH held an 80-69 advantage in digs, while both teams tallied 11 blocks.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow, October 31, when they host Stonehill College at Charger Gymnasium. Game time is set for 1 p.m. and all fans are encouraged to take part in the pumpkin painting contest which starts at 12 p.m. in the Charger Gymn lobby.
