Charger Volleyball Takes 3-0 Win in Regular Season Home Finale

(10-31-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball defeated Stonehill College 3-0 (25-21, 29-27, 25-19) Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium. With the win the Chargers improve to 22-4 overall, 13-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference.

In the opening set, UNH and Stonehill played even for nearly the entire set. After being tied at 19-19, the Chargers scored five-straight points and took a 24-19 lead. The Skyhawks then tallied two kills to cut the UNH leads to 24-21. Tymika Duncan then ended the set with a kill, giving the Chargers a one-set lead.

The second set was played even closer, and went into extra points. Neither team led by more than two points and each team had set points in the later part of the set. UNH led 24-23, but Stonehill scored two straight and led 25-24. The teams exchanged points until the Chargers finally scored three of the final four points to take the 29-27 win.

With a 2-0 lead, the Chargers actually trailed 16-13 midway through the third set at Charger Gymnasium. They rallied however, scoring 12 of the last 15 points and taking their ninth-straight match.

Freshman Keidy Candelaria led the team with 11 kills on 26 attempts. With three errors, she tallied a .308 hitting percentage. She also grabbed a team-high 13 digs to complete the double-double, and three aces. Elizabeth Akinbiyi added nine kills on 18 attempts with three errors for a .333 hitting percentage. Sara Malmlov also tallied double-figure kills with 11, while adding nine digs.

Tia Inong handed out 34 assists, while Heather Ladao grabbed 11 digs.

The Chargers are on the road in their final two regular season matches of the season next weekend. They travel to St. Anselm College on Friday, November 6 for a 7:30 p.m. match and then they are at St. Michael's on Saturday, November 7 at 1 p.m.

With one more win, the Chargers can clinch the No. 1 seed in the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Volleyball Championship which takes place at UMass Lowell on Friday, November 13 and Saturday, November 14.
