Volleyball Continues Win Streak, Sweeps Southern Connecticut

(10-06-09) NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Southern Connecticut State University 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-17) Tuesday night in their 10th straight win. The Chargers improve to 13-3 overall and 6-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Owls fall to 15-4 overall and 4-4 in the NE-10.

New Haven scored the opening point Tuesday and carried the lead throughout the entire first set. The Owls tied the score at 14-14 after scoring five unanswered points in the middle of the set. The Chargers then pulled ahead 24-19 off a SCSU attack error. Southern battled back however, nearly evening the score at 24-23. A block by Elizabeth Akinbiyi and Tia Inong sealed the opening set for the Chargers.

In the second set, UNH opened an early lead and once again continued that throughout the set. Neither team mounted a large scoring run, but the Chargers took an 18-18 tie and scored three straight to take a 21-18 lead. The teams exchanged points for the remainder of the set before Keidy Candelaria registered the set-winning point.

The third set was all Chargers, as they went on a number of scoring runs in the final set. UNH scored eight of the first 12 points to take a 8-4 lead. After the Owls narrowed the Chargers' lead to 14-13, Chelsey Alpough served six consecutive points to give the Chargers a 20-13 lead. New Haven went on to score five and the final nine points, including a SCSU attack error for the match-clinching point.

Junior Sara Molmlov and freshman Candelaria each totaled 13 kills. Candelaria registered four errors on 33 attempts for a .273 hitting percentage. Akinbiyi also added nine kills on 18 attempts with two errors for a team-high .389 hitting percentage. The sophomore middle also made seven blocks in the match. Alpough handed out 38 assists and grabbed 15 digs, while Heather Ladao tallied 17 digs.

The Chargers return to action on Thursday, October 8 when they travel to Dowling College for a non-conference and big regional match. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
