Dowling Ends UNH Win Streak

(10-08-09) OAKDALE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team fell in five sets Thursday night at Dowling College. The loss ends the Chargers 10-game win streak and drops the team to 13-4 on the season, while the Golden Lions improve to 15-4.

The Chargers fell 26-24 in the opening set Thursday. The Chargers were down 24-21 and pushed the set to extra points when scoring three-straight points and pushed the score to 24-24.

UNH rebounded in the second set with a 25-22 victory. The Chargers held a 23-22 lead late and a Sara Malmlov kill gave them their 24th point. Chelsey Alpough added a solo block to take the set one point later.

The third set was won by the Golden Lions, 25-22. The Chargers led 22-18 late in the set, but Dowling fought back and scored seven-straight points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Chargers stayed alive in the match with a 25-23 win in the fourth set. The Chargers trailed 18-16 midway through the match, but they then went on a 5-0 run to take a 21-18 lead. For the rest of the set, the teams exchanged points before another Alpough block gave UNH the win.

In their second fifth set with the Golden Lions in as many meetings, the Chargers fell 15-13. The teams went point for point throughout most of the final set, but Dowling went on a two-point run after leading 10-9 to take a 12-9 lead. They went on a sealed the victory 15-13.

Keidy Candelaria and Malmlov both tallied 20 kills in the match for the Chargers. Malmlov hit at a .349 pace and added nine digs. Candelaria boasted a .310 hitting percentage and six digs. Alpough handed out 50 assists, tallied 11 digs and five service aces.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday when they host Le Moyne College at Charger Gymnasium. Match time is set for 5 p.m.
