Baranger Leads Women's Basketball in Season Opener

(11-15-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team defeated Dominican College 66-46 Sunday afternoon in their 2009-10 season opener. Freshman Jill Baranger led the Chargers with 21 points and 15 rebounds in her UNH debut.

The Chargers opened their 2009-10 season with a six straight points from freshman Jill Baranger. Dominican cut the UNH lead to 6-5 on a jumper from Rachelle Sainten at the 14:33 mark. Freshman Jasmine Hardy helped push the UNH lead to eight with back-to-back scores. At the 6:24 mark in the first half, UNH took a 14-point lead on a three-pointer by freshman Olivia DeMarco. Senior point guard, Helin Marte led the first half offense with six assists, while Baranger led UNH in scoring with 10 points.

The UNH Chargers shot 42.6% from the field and 36.4% from beyond the arc in the first half. They connected on 14 of 33 shots from the floor and 4 of11 from three-point range. Dominican shot 24.2% from the floor and 8.3% from beyond the arc. However, Dominican held a 25-23 rebounding advantage at the half, with nine total offensive boards.

To open the second half, UNH pushed their lead to 21 on six-straight points from Baranger and senior Alysia Saunders. The Dominican Chargers fought their way back and found themselves within 10 at the 11:17 mark on a jumper by Adele Laskowski. However, Baranger answered for UNH and scored four points to put UNH back up by 16. UNH maintained at least a 16-point lead for the remainder of the second half.

For the game, New Haven shot 40.3% from the floor and 35% from downtown connecting on 7-20 treys. New Haven also out rebounded Dominican 48-43. For UNH, Baranger led all players with 21 points and 15 rebounds in her UNH debut. Hardy also had an impressive UNH debut, scoring 10 points including two three-pointers. Nicole Pollard also scored double figures for New Haven with 10 points and three assists. Marte controlled the UNH offense and had a game-high nine assists, along with four steals, seven rebounds and one block.

New Haven is back in action when it travels to American International College Wednesday, November 18 for its Northeast-10 Conference season opener. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
