Chargers Win Seventh Straight, Sweep Assumption

(09-29-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated the Assumption College Greyhounds 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-7) Tuesday night at Charger Gymnasium. The match marks the Chargers seventh-straight victory as they improve to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Assumption falls to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in the NE-10 with the loss.

Tuesday night was all the Chargers as they cruised to the three-set victory. In the opening set, UNH took a 15-10 lead off a block by Elizabeth Akinbiyi and went on to score 10 of the final 14 points of the set. Janeeka Benson put down a kill in the second to give New Haven an 8-4 lead early in the set. UNH went on to take a 14-11 lead after the Greyhounds rallied. The Chargers, however, scored three unanswered points to put Assumption in a 17-11 hole. The teams then exchanged points before the Chargers too the 25-17 decision.

The Greyhounds scored the first point of the final set, but after that it belonged to New Haven. Tia Inong led the Chargers on a 6-0 run to take a 6-1 lead. After Assumption scored one, UNH went on a 5-0 run behind the serving of Keidy Candelaria. Later in the set Chelsey Alpough and Sara Malmlov also went on serving runs of four points and seven points, respectively. The Chargers sealed the 25-7 victory two points later.

Akinbiyi and Malmlov each tallied nine kills. Akinbiyi added a .538 hitting percentage and four total blocks, while Malmlov added a .450 hitting percentage, eight digs and three aces. Alpough handed out 26 assists and Heather Ladao led the UNH back row with nine digs. 

The Chargers return to action on Friday, October 2 when they travel to New Hampshire to take on Franklin Pierce University at 7 p.m.
