WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Franklin Pierce University 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-21) Friday night at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers improve to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win. The Ravens fall to 6-5 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
After opening a seven-point lead at the 14-7 mark of the first set, the Chargers kept at least a two-point cushion the remainder of the set to take the six-point victory. UNH was up 20-17 later in the set and scored five of the final seven points to take the advantage.
The final two sets were played much closer as the Chargers opened leads early in the set, but Franklin Pierce rallied and cut into the UNH lead. In the second set, The Chargers came out swining and took a 7-1 lead early. The Ravens would rebound and eventually tie the game at 17-17. The set was once again tied at 22-22 before UNH went on a 3-0 run and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Chargers once again opened an early lead in the final set, again leading 14-7 midway through. Franklin Pierce again chipped away and brought the score within two points later in the set. The Chargers would score d the final two points and take their 11th win of the season.
Sara Malmlov (Lindesberg, Sweden, Sheridan College) paced the way for the Chargers with 17 kills, 16 digs and one block.
Tymika Duncan (Trinidad, West Indies, St. Joseph’s Convent ) recorded nine kills and only two errors on 16 attempts (.438 hitting percentage).
Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif., Western New Mexico Univ. )added 37 assists and six digs, while
Heather Ladao (West Covina, Calif., Rowland ) led the team with 28 digs.
