WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated UMass Lowell in three sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-18) Friday night at Chargers Gymnasium. With the win, the Chargers improved to 15-2 overall and 8-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Riverhawks dropped to 9-8 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
The first set of the match featured a very quick start for the home team. The Chargers collected five straight points behind the serving of Chelsey Alpough to grasp a 15-5 advantage. UNH sustained the lead and coasted to a 25-18 triumph in the opening set. The Chargers hammered 13 kills and just five errors on 40 attempts in the game.
In the second set, the teams pretty much went point-for-point until the score reached 8-8.
The Chargers then proceeded to knock off seven straight points taking a commanding lead that they would not relinquish. The hosts tallied 18 kills en route to a 25-19 victory.
In the third game, three times in the set the Chargers strung together a series of five of more points. UNH opened up a 19-8 lead and never looked back. Despite a late surge by the visiting Riverhawks, New Haven completed the sweep by the final score of 25-18.
Sara Malmlov led the Chargers once again with 13 kills and three errors on 32 total attempts. Elizabeth Akinbiyi added nine kills with a .400 hitting percentage while Keidy Candelaria chipped in with eight kills and three errors on 26 attempts.
Alpough composed a steady offense all night as the junior dished out a game-high 36 assists. Heather Ladao chimed in with 17 digs and three assists.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow afternoon with a conference match against Merrimack College. First serve is set for 4 p.m. in North Andover, Mass.
