Chargers Outlast Panthers, 3-1

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Adelphi University 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 23-25, 29-27) Tuesday night in a pivital Northeast-10 Conference match in N.Y. With the win, the Chargers improve to 18-2 overall and 11-0 in the NE-10. The Panthers fall to 14-9 overall and 8-3 in conference play.

New Haven opened Tuesday's match by taking the first set in decisive fashion. The Chargers led by as man as 11 points before taking a 10-point victory. Janeeka Benson recorded the Chargers 24th point, while a Panthers error gave the Chargers the set two points later.

The Chargers took another victory in the second set. Adelphi took an early 2-1 lead, but the Chargers took control of the set and led by as many as seven points later in the set. Sara Malmlov tallied the set's final point with a kill, giving UNH a six-point victory.

The Panthers opened the third set with a rally, which gave them an early 10-6 lead. Later in the set, UNH went on a 4-0 run and cut the Panthers lead to 13-12. The Chargers eventually gained the lead, but Adelphi rallied yet again and earned the victory off a Chargers error.

In the fourth set, both teams played point-for-point throughout nearly the whole set. Neither team led by more than four points in the set. UNH held its largest lead, 23-19, when Malmlov put away a kill late in the set. Adelphi then went on a 3-0 run to cut the Chargers' lead to one point. The Panthers would take over the lead at 25-24, 26-25 and 27-26, but the Chargers rallied a scored the final three points to take the set by a score of 29-27.

Malmlov led the team with 25 kills and seven errors on 56 attempts (.321 hitting percentage) in the match. The senior also led the team with 23 digs and added two blocks. Keidy Candelaria tallied 14 kills and 19 digs, while Tymika Duncan led the team with a .353 hitting percentage. Chelsey Alpough dished out 47 assists, while Elizabeth Akinbiyi led the team with seven total blocks.

The Chargers return to action on Friday, October 29 when they host N.Y.I.T. in a non-conference match at Charger Gymnasium. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
