WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated the New York Institute of Technology 3-0 (25-18,25-19,25-20) Friday night in a non-conference match at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers improve to 19-2 overall, while the Bears fall to 16-10.
The Chargers were first to get on the scoreboard Friday night and they never looked back. The Chargers then opened a seven-point at 14-7. Sara Malmlov gave the team its 20th point and another seven point lead at 20-13, while a N.Y.I.T. service error gave the Chargers a 25-18 opening set victory.
The second set was played much closer as the teams exchanged point through the beginning half. After leading by two, 19-17, UNH would eventually go on a 4-0 run and open a 23-17 lead. Four points later, Keidy Candelaria hammered a kill for the Chargers winning point.
With a 2-0 lead in the match, New Haven jumped out to an early lead in the third set at 10-6. The Bears would eventually cut the UNH lead to 15-14 off a 4-0 run. The Chargers rallied and opened a 21-16 lead off an Ali Krikau ace. Tymika Duncan would eventually seal the match for the Chargers as she put down the matches' final kill for a 25-20 UNH victory.
Candelaria and Elizabeth Akinbiyi each recorded 11 kills in the match. Candelaria also tallied a .458 hitting percentage with no errors on 24 attempts. Duncan added eight kills and a .316 hitting percentage, while Malmlov put away eight kills. Heather Ladao led the backrow with 18 digs and Candelaria completed a double-double with 10 digs. Chelsey Alpough dished out 32 assists, while adding nine digs.
The Chargers hit at a .321 clip in the match and recorded 44 total kills.
New Haven hits the road and takes on Stonehill College on Saturday, October 30 in a Northeast-10 Conference battle. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m.
