NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Stonehill College 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-20, 25-19) Saturday afternoon in its 20th win of the 2010 season. With the win the Chargers stand at 20-2 overall and 12-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Stonehill falls to 12-12 overall and 8-4 in conference play.
The Chargers jumped out to an early lead in the opening set and would carry that lead throughout. UNH led by as many as five points and carried a two-point lead at all times in the set. Sara Malmlov put down the set's winning kill off an assists from Chelsey Alpough.
Stonehill rallied to open the second set and led by as many as eight points midway through the set. The Chargers managed to cut the lead to one at 22-21, but the Skyhawks scored three of the next five points and earned the 25-23 victory in the second set.
New Haven once again opened cold to start the third set, going down 7-1 right off the bat. The Chargers gradually chipped away at the lead, while a Stonehill attacking error later in the set tied the score at 18-18. Additional errors by the Skyhawks gave UNH a 23-19 lead before Malmlov and Candelaria put two away to seal the 25-20 victory.
The team's played the fourth and final set much closer, going point-for-point nearly the whole set. After playing to a 14-14 tie, UNH went on a 4-1 run and opened an 18-15 lead. The Chargers used that lead to propel them to the victory. Sophomore Keidy Candelaria sealed the match with a kill for the Chargers 25th point in set four.
Candelaria finished with a match-high 15 kills on 42 attempts with four errors (.262 hitting percentage). She also added 20 digs, one block and one ace to her stat line. Hitters Tymika Duncan, Liz Akinibiyi and Sara Malmlov all added double-digit kills in the match. Setter Chelsey Alpough handed out 42 assists, while Heather Ladao added nine digs in the back row for UNH.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 3 when they host Bentley University in a pivotal Northeast-10 Conference match. Game time at Charger Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.
